SANTACO Mpumalanga chairwoman Fanyana Sibanyoni explained that car owners are not allowed to give rides to pedestrians as it violates the rights of taxi drivers. He added that only taxi drivers have permits to pick up passengers.

Videos have appeared on the Internet showing patrolmen stopping drivers on the road to pick up hitchhikers.

The patrol also took away the vehicle of one of the drivers, who returned it only after paying the fine.
