Blind student hit by a train

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A blind student has died after being hit by a train in Michigan.

According to the Dutch Department of Public Security, authorities were called to the scene on Saturday evening.

According to authorities, Jennifer Kasunick, a student at Hope College, was found at the scene unconscious and not breathing.

Before the incident, Kasunick was walking on the sidewalk when the train signals went off. She stopped just west of the tracks but “apparently did not realize she was close to the tracks,” according to police, who cited video from the scene.

Authorities said Kasunick was hit by a train as it passed by. She was taken to hospital, where she later died.

Her service dog, Rowdy, survived the accident.

Hope College president Matthew Scogin was a “well-liked member” of the community.

“To know her was to love her,” he said.
