Critically injured person was released from the camper wreck by the rescue services and the digger, more than two hours after the tree fell on the vehicle.

The incident took place in the small rural settlement of Balmoral, in the Hurunui Canterbury district, on Sunday evening.

The spokesman for the Fire and Emergency NZ said that he had received reports about a fallen tree just before 19:30.

St John Ambulance treated the patient when he was still imprisoned.
