The Bears insist they are keeping Tyrique Stevenson’s status a secret

The Bears’ starting lineup could be greatly impacted by injuries and it is also possible that disciplinary sanctions will be imposed.

Coach Matt Eberflus did not reveal whether cornerback Tyrique Stevenson would face disciplinary action in the form of a suspension or fine on Friday.

If he doesn’t start, it won’t be the first time this year.

Stevenson was facing the wrong direction and yelling at fans during Sunday’s Hail Mary game against Washington. Stevenson also mishandled the ball on the play and then passed the ball straight to the man he was supposed to give Washington the points it needed to win 18-15.

“I’m not going to talk about who’s going to start at that particular spot,” coach Matt Eberflus said. “I spoke to Tyrique again. He had a really good week of training. He did well to refocus.

“I appreciate his efforts to move on to the next phase, which is Arizona.”

Eberflus was asked about the importance of who started the season at cornerback. Stevenson did not start in this match, nor did Terell Smith, but Stevenson came on shortly after the match started.

Stevenson also missed the match in London, but this was due to a calf injury suffered in training.

“There’s a reason we have turnovers,” Eberflus said. “It could be a competition. This could be a guy coming back and his workload needs to be reduced.

“It could be a lot of different things.”

Eberflus was a bit more open about the injury. The Bears could bring back Kyler Gordon at linebacker after a limited practice Friday, his first since suffering a hamstring injury in London. It’s questionable. Montez Sweat’s defensive play is also in question due to a shin injury that kept him out of last week’s decisive game. He completed one limited practice on Thursday but no others, and the Bears are counting on the 48 hours until the game to help him heal so their top pass rusher can start the game.

Safety Jaquan Brisker’s absence again will raise eyebrows. He has been sidelined since October 6 following his third concussion.

“It’s really just the symptom part,” Eberflus said. “That’s really what it’s all about. He made progress again. He comes to meetings, attends guides, gets into these things, and then he has these symptoms.

“I repeat that it will always be about his safety, health and where he is. Jaquan brings a lot of passion and energy to our team and certainly to our defense. He had a really good year before this year. His health and safety is the most important thing and we want to make sure we do a good job first and then he brings back that passion and energy like he always has.”

Another big question is what their offensive line will look like. Eberflus echoed the sentiment of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who said they prefer to keep the subs in one position at a time rather than create confusion by moving the starter to a different position, which then means two position changes.

They will miss Braxton Jones with a knee injury, while substitute Kiran Amegadjie has a calf injury. So it seems that Larry Borom will probably play after spending the entire season on the bench with injuries and having had ankle problems since training camp.

This would allow them to keep Matt Pryor at right guard. The only problem may be if Teven Jenkins’ knee injury becomes too severe to allow him to play. He did not train on Thursday and had limited training on Friday.

Depth at the defensive position may be limited and it was thought that substitute Ryan Bates would be able to come off the injured substitute when the window opened for him to return to the pitch.

“We’ll see where Ryan is,” Eberflus said. “Today was Ryan’s first day in the move, so we’ll see how it all goes.”
