Four people injured in house collapse, 50 houses submerged in floods in Tiruppur

TIRUPPUR: Four family members, including two children, were injured when a side wall of a house collapsed in AD Colony at Kangeyampalayam Pudur in Tiruppur following heavy rains early on Friday. The injured were identified as Kumar (35), his wife Sasikala (33), their son Kishore (13) and daughter Keerthana (9).

“The side walls of their house, made of mud and stone, were wet from the constant rain. On Friday, around 6 a.m., a wall collapsed, injuring four residents. They have been admitted to Medical College Hospital, Tiruppur,” sources said.

More than 50 houses in residential areas along the banks of Jammanai stream were submerged after rains caused flash flood in the stream. According to district disaster management statistics, Tiruppur received 331.40 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8 a.m. on Friday. Various parts of Tiruppur district received heavy rains from 2 a.m. on Friday, flooding waterways in the city. Thereafter, flash flood occurred at around 5 a.m. in the Jammanai stream, a branch of the Noyyal river, due to which rainwater entered about 40 houses in Thanthai Periyar Nagar and about 10 houses in Pon Nagar, adjacent to the Jammanai stream, in Ward 42 of the Company.

Residents left their house and went to the main road because their belongings were flooded by rainwater. After receiving the information, the corporation authorities and treasurers reached the spot and inspected the affected houses. The affected people were accommodated in a nearby community center and the corporation served them breakfast.

A senior Tiruppur Corporation official said, “Flash floods in the Jammanai stream submerged houses in the area. However, we immediately ran to the site. The blockages under the creek footbridge in the area were cleared and the situation stabilized within a few hours. Additionally, we continue to monitor the area.”
