14 people died when a roof collapsed at the entrance to the railway station in Novi Sad, Serbia.

On Friday, November 1, rescuers searched through piles of concrete and twisted metal for survivors.

According to ReutersMultiple cranes and bulldozers, as well as numerous rescuers and workers, assisted in searching the rubble, with medical personnel and ambulances nearby.

The collapse occurred on Friday afternoon in the city about 70 km northwest of the capital Belgrade, and bodies were pulled from the rubble throughout the afternoon.

86-year-old pensioner Vera, who lives about 200 meters from the scene, said: “Our windows were open because it was warm outside, I heard a huge bang and saw a cloud of dust, that’s all I saw. Later I heard what happened.”

Additionally, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic told Tanjug news that he did not expect the death toll to increase significantly.

Similarly, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said five people had not yet been recognized.

In a gesture of solidarity, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Novi Sad City Hall to light and place candles in memory of the victims of the disaster, some of them appeared in tears.

N1 news reported that train departures from the station had been suspended, noting that the recently constructed building had not accommodated the roof collapse section.
