New York Knicks update Precious Achiuwa’s health

New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau provided an update on his team’s health as his team played on a four-game road trip.

While Thibodeau noted that injured internal affairs officer Precious Achiuwa has made “good, steady progress” and is traveling with the team, he suggested the veteran is unlikely to speak out during the ongoing trek, which has reached its halfway point with on Friday night, he won against the Detroit Pistons 128-98.

“He does a little bit more on the court,” said Thibodeau, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post. “When a guy can start doing things on the court, he usually travels with us. Sometimes it’s better to keep him back (in New York) because we can do more rehab at the facility.”

Achiuwa, who signed a one-year contract late in the offseason after being traded to the Toronto Raptors in December 2023, has yet to play this season after tearing his hamstring in the preseason finale against Washington on Oct. 18. originally listed as absent for a minimum of two to four weeks on October 20, after which reassessment will occur.

The 25-year-old returned to the court after the Knicks’ image was partially ruined by the loss of Isaiah Hartenstein and Mitchell Robinson, who continued to struggle with injuries. Achiuwa was one of several New Yorkers who rose to the occasion last year when injuries ate away at him in the starting rotation, averaging 7.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in 49 appearances (including 18 starts).

Early returns to a revamped Knicks team suggest Achiuwa may be taking his time: New York (3-2) is allowing the fewest rebounds per game at just over 38, largely due to his efforts Cities of Charles Anthony and Josh Hart, both of whom are averaging over 10 points early in the game.

New York returns to action on Monday night against the Houston Rockets (8:45 p.m. ET, MSG).
