Police said the accident involved a bus traveling at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road. No other vehicles were involved.

Police said three people suffered serious injuries, two had moderate injuries and five others suffered minor injuries – all of whom were taken to hospital by helicopter. Hato Hone St John listed 12 people as requiring hospital treatment.

The road is still blocked and is expected to remain so for some time.

Detours are in effect at Ōhaaki Road and Vaile Road.

A Hato Hone spokesman said there were four ambulances, a helicopter and a rapid response unit at the scene, as well as four clinical support units and one Mist support unit (major incident support team).

Paramedics examined as many as 30 people on the bus.

The second helicopter is on its way.

One patient in a moderate condition and one in a serious condition were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

Three patients in a moderate condition, one in a mild condition and one patient in a serious condition were taken to Rotorua Hospital.

Five patients were taken to Taupō Hospital in a minor condition.
