A fatal tanker accident has closed the northbound side of the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) — One person was killed and two others injured when a tanker truck overturned on the northbound Harbor 110 Freeway at Manchester Boulevard, spilling 500 to 1,000 gallons of jet fuel onto the road, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Sunday.

The crash was reported at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, and responding personnel found one person dead under the tanker, LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.

She added that the tanker driver was transported to the hospital by private vehicle and had no contact with LAFD first responders. A 30-year-old woman with minor injuries was transported by the emergency medical team to the hospital.

Stewart said firefighters used a redwood plug to stop a leak in the tanker, which had about 8,000 gallons of jet fuel remaining.

Both sides of the 110 Freeway near Manchester Boulevard in South Los Angeles are closed after a fatal tanker crash overnight.

Authorities said LAFD crews assisted CalTrans in laying absorbent to control and contain the spilled fuel.

Stewart said once that process is complete, the tanker owner will handle the unloading of the fuel, and LAFD will provide safety oversight. She added that firefighters will also assist the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner in extricating the victim from the vehicle, which may require lifting the truck.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert for northbound 110 in Manchester for an unknown duration and advised drivers to seek alternate routes for the northbound and southbound lanes between Slauson and Rosecrans avenues until cleanup is completed.

The south side reopened before 7 a.m
