The University of California, San Diego welcomes students and two new neighborhoods to campus

Theater District – a district of life and learning

The Living and Learning Neighborhood provides accommodation for 2,000 students and includes the new Eighth College undergraduate college. This helps reduce each college’s population from 5,000 to approximately 4,000 students, ensuring students continue to benefit from a world-class education in the smaller, more intimate environment offered by the University of California, San Diego college system. The new undergraduate college also creates the opportunity to create new connections, communities and traditions.

“We strive to create an environment where all students feel they belong and are valued,” said LeRoy Ford, director of residence life and associate dean of student affairs at Eighth College. “I believe that with our programming efforts led by our resident assistants and other student leaders, we are well on our way to building a solid foundation for Eighth College to grow. I am excited about the prospect of the neighborhood opening up to our newest residents and can’t wait to see what we create together as a community.”

The Living and Learning Neighborhood theater district provides more than 1,000 on-campus parking spaces and will offer multiple ways for the community to connect, including a market hall, restaurant, conference center, extensive outdoor gathering spaces including a one-mile walking trail and improved parking/reception area for theater patrons in the adjacent Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater District.

The community celebrated the new addition to campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 17. Speakers included Chancellor Khosla, Eighth College Chancellor Angela Booker, Senior Vice Chancellor for Housing Services, Retail and Supply Chain Hemlata Jhaveri, La Jolla Playhouse for Rich Family Artistic Director Christopher Ashley and resident assistant Linh Nguyen, who is one of Eighth College’s first female students.
