A Grade 6 student failed his KIPSEA exam after being shot in Narok-Kuria clashes

Migori County – A 12-year-old Grade 6 student, appearing for this year’s KIPSEA exam, was shot dead in Gitembe, Kuria East, Migori county.

The killing came at the height of decades-long clashes on the Narok-Kuria border, in which 12 people have been killed in the past three months.

“It breaks my heart to see my harmless son killed like this. It hurts me as a father. My son’s only crime was being a Curia,” said Wambura Marwa, the father of the dead boy.

Fighting back tears, Wambura narrated TUKO.co.ke that he learned about his son’s death six hours after the incident.

“The police called us to the police station and said that the attackers had called them to come and take my son’s body, and yet they did not make an arrest. We wonder why… I received the news six hours after my son’s death. I didn’t believe it. from what I saw, his body was in pieces,” Marwa said.

Marwa said that his son left at 11 a.m. on Sunday to pasture at the shelter, where he met his untimely death.

The family seeks justice amid high tensions between two ethnic communities.

Locals are now accusing police officers recently stationed at the border of supporting the neighboring Maasai community and always taking a backseat while the neighboring community attacks their community.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve been killed. Attackers always attack our farms, take our products, go to our homes, steal our animals and kill our people,” said local Magabe Johannes Chacha.

Residents also accused local authorities of taking no action and ignoring their cries.

Kuria East MP Kitayama Maisori expressed his dissatisfaction with police officers who mentioned that they slept on their works.

“The incident is painful and we want a lasting solution to this border conflict,” he said.

He urged residents to remain calm and not embark on a revenge mission, saying that despite their pain and anger, they should allow the law to prevail.

“We have had a meeting with both regional security officers and as soon as parliament resumes, we will contact the National Security Commission to ensure a lasting solution for our people,” he confirmed.

Migori Deputy Governor Joseph Mahiri urged the national government to take the issue seriously security reports to the national government.

“We have tried with the Migori district governor, but the governor of our neighboring Narok district and the Member of Parliament are reluctant on the issue,” Joseph Mahiri said.

He also pointed an accusing finger at the Narok County government for refraining from resolving the dispute.
