A couple from Andhra committed suicide over their son’s decision to marry a transgender person

Nandyal: A middle-aged couple allegedly committed suicide in Nandyal district after their 24-year-old son expressed his desire to marry a transgender person. According to Nandyal sub-divisional police officer P. Srinivas Reddy, Subba Rayudu (45) and Saraswati (38) took their lives following conflicts over their son, Sunil Kumar, who had been working with the local transgender community for the past three years .

Kumar has been in a relationship with a transgender person for three years and has adamantly not married the woman. He insisted on staying with a transgender person, which led to frequent arguments with his parents.

Police said on Thursday that Kumar had previously attempted suicide in this case. Further investigation revealed that Kumar had spent Rs 1.5 lakh belonging to transgender people, prompting them to demand the amount from their parents and create nuisance. They claim that public insults directed at his parents by members of the transgender community deepened their suffering and prompted them to take the extreme step. An investigation is underway.
