A man injured in a shooting at the Port of Nogales had more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition in his spare tire

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – A man identified as Miguel Soto-Morando is facing three federal charges after officer-involved shooting It happened when Soto-Morando tried to smuggle ammunition Oct. 16 at the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales.

The federal document says Soto-Morando was caught trying to illegally export more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition from the United States to Mexico.

The suspect then drove toward Mexico with the officer clinging to his truck. The document shows that the suspect used the vehicle to assault a Customs and Border Protection officer.

The U.S. District Court released photos of the confiscated ammunition.

According to reports, Soto-Morando was driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck when a CBP dog alerted officers to possible contraband near the rear bumper of the truck. During an additional inspection, officers discovered high readings in the vehicle’s spare tire, prompting further investigation.

While the officer was speaking with Soto-Morando, the suspect allegedly attempted to drive away with the officer partially inside the vehicle, driving toward the international border.

The truck collided with a cement pole, causing the officer to fall.

When the suspect came out, officers fired their guns, striking him in the leg and arm.

A careful inspection revealed that approximately 3,140 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition were hidden in the spare tire.

Law enforcement records also show that Soto-Morando has a prior felony conviction, which prohibits him from possessing ammunition under federal law.

The three charges are: attempted illegal export of ammunition, assault on a federal officer and possession of ammunition as a convicted felon.

The case is currently under federal investigation and no further details have been released at this time.
