Police say a Haverhill school committee member groped a teenager outside a 7-Eleven and called him a ‘weird.’

Documents filed in Haverhill District Court show that a Haverhill school committee member has been charged with assault and battery on a teenager.

Cheryl Ferguson was arraigned on charges of indecent assault and battery 14 or older after she was arrested for allegedly groping a disguised teenager outside a 7-Eleven Tuesday night.

According to a police report, the teen’s mother told police that her son was standing outside a convenience store on Dudley Street around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday wearing a Halloween mask when Ferguson allegedly approached him and groped his buttocks.

Ferguson allegedly entered the 7-Eleven, then came out again and touched the teen’s chest, saying, “Oh, you have nipples.” The teenager allegedly told Ferguson to leave, who responded by calling him a “weird.”

Police say the teenager returned home and told his mother about the incident.

When police visited her home, Ferguson told officers she had been to the 7-Eleven to play Keno, and as she was leaving, she poked the teenager in the chest, commenting, “You’re terrible.” Ferguson was then arrested.

Following her arraignment on Tuesday, Ferguson was released on personal recognizance on Wednesday and ordered to stay away from the teenager and other people under 16 years of age. She was ordered to wear a GPS tracking device and work a curfew of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Furgueson’s access to the school grounds will be restricted.

“Today we were informed that the Haverhill Police Department has filed criminal charges against a member of the school committee,” Mayor Melinda E. Barrett and Superintendent Margaret Marotta said in a joint statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to restrict members’ access to the school grounds and are taking other precautions until further notice. “

According to Haverhill Public School website and information from the police report, Ferguson serves on the school committee.
