Former county commissioner accused of having sex with children in Angelina County

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – A former Angelina County commissioner serving time on domestic violence and child sexual assault charges in Polk County is now preparing for trial in Angelina County.

Robert Garrison Cheshire, 56, of Diboll, is charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child. Cheshire, a former county commissioner, was most recently booked into the Angelina County Jail on Aug. 22. He appeared in Angelina County Judge Todd Kassaw’s court Thursday for a pretrial hearing.

Cheshire has been serving a sentence since 2019 for continuous violence against a family member, and in 2022 he was arrested on a Polk County warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Cheshire will face jury selection on Monday.

San Jacinto First Assistant District Attorney Rob Freyer spoke to KTRE after the pretrial hearing in Cheshire about the details of the case. Freyer is pursuing the case after the Angelina County District Attorney recused himself.

KTRE has asked Angelina County to file indictments in the Cheshire case.
