Russia ready to contribute to resolving the conflict in the Middle East, Kremlin says – Russian politics and diplomacy

MOSCOW, November 1. /TASS/. Moscow is ready to contribute to resolving the conflict in the Middle East while maintaining contact with all parties involved, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Quoting a similar statement from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who noted that Moscow maintains open lines of communication with the Israelis, Iranians, Lebanese and other involved parties, Peskov said: “And of course, whenever our efforts prove successful, Russia will be ready to do so.”

The Russian president’s spokesman commented on a Newsweek report that said Israel had asked Russia to mediate in connection with its conflict with the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon.

Summarizing the BRICS summit in Kazan, Putin urged cooperation with all participants in the process and efforts to prevent the conflict in the Middle East from deepening. Moreover, the Russian leader warned against triggering disproportionate reactions to terrorist attacks.

On October 1, Iran launched a massive missile attack on Israel in response to the assassination of senior officials of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Israeli General Staff announced retaliation. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that attacks on Israel will only intensify.

On October 26, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was carrying out surgical strikes on military targets in Iran “in response to months of sustained attacks.”
