AND a massive fire that engulfed the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge and Interstate 471 on the Ohio River, Cincinnatians may have recalled another major fire that cut through the main route between Ohio and Kentucky.

In 2020 Brent Spence Bridge which carries Interstates 71 and 75 across the Ohio River, was closed for weeks after an accident sparked a massive fire.

Here’s a look back at this disaster and other fires and bridge collapses around Ohio.

Brent Spence Bridge on I-75 closed after fire and accident

Early Wednesday morning, a boat poured water on a burning truck on the Brent Spence Bridge. The fire occurred after an accident involving two semi-trucks. One truck was carrying potassium hydroxide. The bridge will be closed pending an inspection.

On November 11, 2020 a truck carrying potassium hydroxide collided with a lift truck on the Brent Spence Bridge, causing a major fire that ended closing a span of the Ohio River for six weeks.

According to 911 calls, the driver of an Old Dominion semi-trailer that collided with a lift truck did not have time to grab Hazmat documents before fleeing the truck, the Enquirer previously reported.

“It started burning and I just jumped out,” he told the dispatcher because he couldn’t get the documents in time.

Neither he nor the lift driver was injured.

Bridge repairs included new steel support beams and new sections of concrete on the upper and lower decks. The United States Department of Transportation issued $12 million in federal funds available for emergency repairs.

A bridge on which over 160,000 vehicles pass daily one of the busiest routes for truck transport in the United States, reopened on December 22, 2020.

On Jan. 27, a diesel tanker driver died after driving off a bridge on an on-ramp to Interstate 271 from State Route 8 north of Akron.

A truck carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel exploded, causing a massive fire that closed the bridge for several days. The Akron Beacon Journal reports. It reopened after inspections showed that the damage did not affect the bridge’s structural integrity.

However, one of these eyes had a small, invisible flaw. The faulty eyelet eventually cracked and began to corrode out of sight of the public or bridge inspectors.
