LAKE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – A student resource officer will receive a national award for his response to a shot fired Thursday in the parking lot of Riverview Elementary School.

The One in Five Foundation for Children, formerly the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, is a national nonprofit organization established in response to the May 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

The unnamed officer will receive a National Award for Heroism from the organization.

“This brave officer is a direct result of his commitment and compassion to law enforcement on our nation’s campuses,” said Daniel Chapin, founder of the foundation.
“The officer used his training to observe for potential threats to students and acted quickly and methodically to ensure students’ safety. We honor this officer and the department he serves. Heroes still wear badges.”

Students and staff at Riverview Elementary were on lockdown for about an hour Thursday after shots were fired in the school’s parking lot.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies were called to the school around 9:10 a.m. Thursday after the school’s resource officer approached the vehicles involved in the shooting.

Officials say the SRO ordered the man in possession of the firearm to exit the vehicle and drop the weapon before a struggle occurred with the suspect.

Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno confirmed that Alexander Sinclair had been arrested.
