According to the FDNY, a firefighter was seriously injured after falling 40 feet from a window while extinguishing a fire that broke out at a five-alarm Manhattan apartment building on Friday.

A smoke-eater was backing up the stairs of a six-story building that caught fire in Hamilton Heights when he accidentally fell out of a fifth-story window and into a shaft behind the building, officials and sources said.

Sources told The Post that the mishap occurred while a firefighter was backing up the hose.

“He received immediate medical attention at the bottom of the shaft from FDNY medics on scene and paramedics,” FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said at a news conference Friday. “Our paramedics, emergency firefighters, got to him very quickly.”

“We were blessed today to have a fire department medic on scene as well as elite paramedics,” EMS Chief Michael Fields said at a news conference.

According to the FDNY, the firefighter is in serious but stable condition at Harlem Hospital.

A firefighter battled a fire that broke out on the second floor of an apartment building on West 145th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, just after 2:40 p.m., authorities said.

FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said strong winds blowing through the front windows fueled the fire as flames spread to the sixth floor.

More than 200 firefighters fought the huge fire.
