Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a first-time voter, it’s a good idea to brush up on the rules and find new places to learn about the candidates.

Polls will be busy on election day, so experts are asking for patience.

On election night, Tennesseans shouldn’t have to wait long for results. Election officials say Volunteer State results should be available around 11 p.mbut of course it varies. Long lines at the end of the day will delay vote counting until everyone has cast their ballot.

Here’s what you need to know before Tuesday’s vote.

What day is election day?

When are the elections? It’s Tuesday, November 5.

What are the voting locations in Knoxville and Knox County?

First, determine your polling station’s address sos.tn.gov/govotetn. You can search by your name or address.

You can only go to a specific pilling location on Election Day, November 5.

What time do the polling stations open? What are the voting hours?

Polls open at 8:00 a.m. ET and close at 8:00 p.m. ET.

In the Central Time Zone of Middle and West Tennessee, polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT.

What happens if the polling station closes while I’m in line?

Lines can be long on election day! If you get in line before the polls close, you can cast your vote and it will be counted. Get in line to exercise your right to vote.

Can you register to vote on Election Day?

No, not in Tennessee.

Can I still receive an absentee ballot?

No, this deadline has passed.

For those with stamped absentee ballots, they can only be returned to precinct election officials post. Voters can choose between USPS, FedEX and UPS, but personal delivery is not allowed.

Where are the voting boxes?

Absentee ballot drop boxes are not legal in Tennessee because absentee ballots must be mailed (use a stamp!).

But on election day, there is a last minute option. Knox County voters who have not mailed in their ballots can bring them to the two post offices until 4 p.m. on November 5.

  • Weisgarber Post Office, 1237 Weisgarber Road

Can I cast a provisional vote?

Yes. If you forget to bring your ID or your registration is questioned, you can cast a provisional ballot. You have two business days after Election Day to go to your local board of elections office and show your ID or proper registration.

Can I wear political T-shirts while voting?

It depends.

T-shirts or buttons that specifically promote a candidate or ballot issue are not permitted in the polling station or in the 30-meter buffer zone.

For example, a voter cannot wear a MAGA hat because the slogan is so closely associated with former President Donald Trump.

Can I use my phone at polling stations?

Voters can use mobile devices to help them make decisions, for example after saving a list of candidates in an electronic note or if they have questions about a candidate. Election officials may require the device to operate in silent mode.

Can I take photos at polling stations?

NO. Voters cannot make telephone calls, take photos or record videos at the polling station. This includes selfies.

Journalists can take photos and record videos.
