An 8-year-old in Florida was seriously injured after a Sarasota police officer hit him with a police car on Monday. The incident was recorded on body camera footage.

Gerard Butler, 8, had just received a minibike as a birthday present the weekend before the accident. He started driving it home when he became afraid of police activity in his neighborhood and his mother, Regina Sanders, he told CBS affiliate WTSP.

An officer in a patrol vehicle leaving the scene of another call hit the boy around 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28, Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche said at a news conference. The The police also shared information graphic body camera footage available online.

One video shows an unnamed officer turning left at an intersection, passing a stop sign without appearing to have come to a complete stop, before accelerating and striking the child. The officer then exits his patrol car and Butler lies on the ground a good distance away from the vehicle.

“The cops just see them flying, they fly at least 60 miles, and they don’t care about the stop signs, they just fly down the road,” Sanders told WTSP. “I was inside and I just heard something grinding and then I saw a little minibike there.”

In the video, the officer calls for backup and medical assistance as a crowd of panicked neighbors forms. Meanwhile, police attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation but cannot find a defibrillator.

According to reports, the child was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital where he was treated for serious injuries early release by the police. Earlier this week, Sanders told WTSP that her son had undergone two brain surgeries and knee surgery and was also scheduled for jaw surgery.

In Wednesday’s update from ABC WWSB branch, Sanders said her son could only move his legs slightly and cough from the moment he was admitted to the hospital.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” Sanders said.

Police told WTSP the officer was not injured but was shaken by the incident. He remains under strict administrative responsibilities during the investigation.
