Clemson AD, vice president of student affairs, releases statement following bottle throwing incident against Louisville

Clemson athletic director Graham Neff and vice president of student affairs Doug Hallenbeck released a statement a day after fans they threw water bottles into the field to protest an onside kick call against the Tigers during a 33-21 loss to Louisville.

“The actions of the few reflect on the many, and throwing objects on the field is contrary to the environment we want to create and who we are as a Clemson Family. At the same time, we congratulate those who encouraged others to stop, alleviated further problems and quickly cleared the field.” statement read in part. “The core values of our university begin with integrity and respect, and we expect our students to uphold these qualities at all times.”

With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Clemson made it 26-14 on a short touchdown run by Phil Mafaha. The Tigers then lined up for an onside kick and appeared to recover it, but possession was awarded to Louisville after a review. Some Tigers fans then responded by throwing water bottles onto the field.

It doesn’t appear that any penalty will be handed out in connection with Saturday’s events, but the ACC will certainly be on high alert. Meanwhile, Clemson’s next home game is Nov. 23 against The Citadel.
