A man was killed and an officer was injured in downtown Helena Saturday evening

HELENA – A man has died and an officer is recovering after being stabbed following an overnight incident in downtown Helena on Saturday.

According to a Helena Police Department report, officers were dispatched to Jester’s Bar, located at 200 North Rodney, on a report of a person who refused to leave and was barricaded in a bathroom.

Officers say the man brandished a knife when they tried to talk to him, which resulted in the officer using a stun gun to detain the man.

The man then allegedly stabbed one of the officers, and the officers shot him.

The report shows that officers provided the man with medical assistance, but the man died from gunshot injuries and the doctor pronounced him dead at the scene. The injured cabinet was transported to St. Peter’s Health for treatment and his condition is stable.

The identity of the deceased or the officers involved in the incident have not been released.

Per department protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. To ensure transparency, the Lewis and Clark Sheriff’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved and affected by this tragic event. This event impacts our entire community and we want to make sure we are thinking of everyone during this time,” said Police Chief Brett Petty.
