Jury selection will begin for the suspect accused of killing an Alamogordo police officer

Dominic De La O is accused of shooting Officer Anthony Ferguson during a traffic stop last year.

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – A man accused of killing an Alamogordo police officer last year is scheduled to go on trial, with a jury trial scheduled for Monday.

Dominic De La O faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, for allegedly shooting and killing Alamogordo Police Officer Anthony Ferguson during a traffic stop. At the time of the shooting, investigators said De La O was facing charges in two other criminal cases.

In January 2022, De La O drove under the influence of alcohol and fled from law enforcement. He was arrested and released on bail with certain conditions. However, due to the ongoing proceedings, he violated these conditions.

De La O took up a new cause in January 2023. Officers tried to serve him a warrant when a foot chase ended in a shooting.

Documents show that De La O shot at Alamogordo police officers. He was shot.

His terms were then withdrawn for a short time. In June, after his attorney told a judge that the detention center did not provide him with adequate medical care.

Twelfth Judicial District Judge Angie Schneider agreed to “give him another chance.”

He was fired just a month before the alleged shooting of Alamogordo Officer Anthony Ferguson.

De La O also faces federal firearms charges in that case, and a trial is scheduled for next year.

A federal judge recently convicted 31-year-old Jonah Apodaca of providing the sawed-off shotgun that authorities say De La O used to kill Ferguson.
