New York man charged with assault for wearing ‘Trump 2024’ hat at supermarket

A news release says police in a New York village arrested a man on Friday on suspicion of assaulting a stranger for wearing a “Trump 2024” campaign hat.

The Bath Police Department said that earlier in the day, 60-year-old Robert Yott punched a person in the mouth several times at a Tops supermarket. The agency noted that he broke the victim’s teeth and poured blood into her mouth.

Yott allegedly attacked the victim because he was wearing a hat with the words “Trump 2024” written on it. Unofficial information shows that the suspect did not know the person he allegedly attacked. As a result of the incident, Yott was charged with second-degree assault and criminal mischief.

Last week, police in Florida said they arrested an 18-year-old who held a machete outside an early voting site to antagonize voters with different political views.

According to city police, Caleb Williams and seven teenagers approached a group of people waving signs outside the Neptune Beach location and became involved in an argument.

“The group came there with the sole intention of causing a disturbance,” Neptune Beach Police Chief Michael Key Jr. said. “This is not an incident involving solely a right protected under the First Amendment, but rather one where they simply showed up to create a disturbance.”

Rep. Laurel Lee, D-Florida, urged citizens in September to moderate their political rhetoric following the second assassination attempt on former President Trump.

“There is no question that we need to take this matter seriously, take the threat seriously and tone down this rhetoric as we move forward,” she said.

President Joe Biden also asked Americans in a speech to the US after the first coup attempt to “cool down” what he said had become “heated” rhetoric.

“As the elections approach, we all face testing times. And the higher the stakes, the more passionate passions become,” Biden said. “This puts an additional burden on each of us to ensure that no matter how strong our beliefs, we will never descend into violence.”
