Joe Mazzulla advocates games like Return of Power

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is interested in implementing the “power play” and fighting the NBA to make the league more entertaining. While performing on Zolak and Bertrand on NBC Sports BostonMazzulla detailed the idea of implementing these ideas into the NBA rule book.

“Basketball is one of the few sports where there is no strength,” Mazzulla said. “I think soccer just showed a blue card where a guy has to give a foul and it’s 10-on-9. We should have a power play because if you get a technical foul or a receiving foul, you’re not really rewarded for it because if you miss , you will not receive a reward for a foul. There should be a power play where, in the event of a technical foul, you must play five-on-four for five seconds or three passes.

“From an entertainment standpoint, the most important thing we’re robbing people of is that you can’t fight anymore. We should just bring the fighting back,” Mazzulla said. “You wanna talk about robbing the league of entertainment, what’s more fun than a little fight? How is it that hitting is allowed in baseball? I don’t understand… I don’t understand why some sports are allowed to clear the benches. They have sticks and weapons, we just don’t have a ball.”

Not everyone was a fan of Mazzulli’s idea. Golden State Warriors forward and four-time NBA champion Draymond Green, who has been suspended multiple times for fighting or throwing punches, rejected Mazzulla’s idea.

“I understand what Joe is trying to get at,” Green continuedDraymond’s show with Baron Davis. “This nonsense and guys get touchy, we’re taking so much of that out of the game today. … Real, physical fights, Joe, I’m here to file a petition against you.”

Green added: “Where did (the fight) almost take me, man? I don’t want this. I’ll leave it to Joe. Joe, go and fight.”
