The verdict was handed down in the murder trial of Adam Coy

The jury in the murder trial of former Columbus police officer Adam Coy has returned a verdict in his murder trial.

The verdict is expected to be read in court on Monday afternoon. ABC 6 will broadcast the verdict reading live here on this page at 12:45 p.m. According to ABC 6, several members of Hill’s family were already at the courthouse at 12:10 p.m.

Panel consisting of 15 membersThe meeting was held throughout Thursday and Fridayended on Friday afternoon without a decision being made. The judges returned at 9:30 a.m. Monday and announced they had reached their verdict just before noon.

Coy faces charges of murder, reckless homicide and criminal assault in connection with… Andre Hill shooting in December 2020. During his testimony last week, Coy said he thought Hill had a gun in his hand. Heemotionally he testified that “without a doubt” Hill held a silver revolver in his right hand and feared for his life.

It was later determined that Hill had a set of keys in his hand.

Defense attorneys maintained their case Tuesday, calling retired CPD and SWAT officer Jim Scanlon as an expert witness.

When asked by the defense about the use of deadly force, Scanlon stated: “No, they are trained to do the opposite. You cannot wait for this force to be used against you. You must respond to this threat. If this happens, it poses a reasonably perceived threat, you must respond.”

Prosecutors argued that Coy acted recklessly when he shot Hill.

Closing arguments were delivered on Wednesdayand jury deliberations began on Thursday morning. Legal experts noted the complexity of the case. Mark Weaver, a former special prosecutor, said: “I would be surprised if we could get a unanimous verdict here.”
