Grassfield HS student arrested after reports of loaded gun

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Officials said a girl from Grassfield High School in Chesapeake was arrested after another student reported a person with a loaded gun on Monday.

Police responded and escorted the juvenile off the school grounds. She was immediately detained and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, where she is awaiting charges.

Another student reportedly spotted a person with a gun and immediately notified an administrator.

The voicemail sent to parents read as follows:

Good morning, this is Brian Haughinberry, principal of Grassfield High School, with an important message for our parents and guardians.

This morning, a student was detained by police after school administrators found a loaded firearm in his possession. I would like to assure you that there were no threats made to students or staff during this incident.

I want to commend the student who did the right thing by reporting this matter to a trusted adult. Today’s response is a powerful example of our “see something, say something” message.

I also want to remind everyone that possession of any weapons is strictly prohibited on school premises, and violations of these weapons carry serious consequences. Immediate disciplinary action was taken in this matter and the incident was referred to the Chesapeake Police Department for further investigation. Chesapeake Public Schools is committed to prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law anyone who threatens the safety of our schools.

I encourage you to use this event as an opportunity to talk openly with your child about what is not allowed on school premises. Remind them to report any safety concerns to an adult immediately. By working together, we can ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of our students and staff.
