A family is paying tribute to a “beloved dad and dad” killed in a crash in Hamilton

A man who died in a fatal crash in Hamilton has been called a “beloved dad and dad.”

James Craig died at the scene after being hit by a car traveling north on the A723 near Quarry Street at around 12.40pm on Sunday.

The 70-year-old from Hamilton was remembered by his family as a “wonderful man”.

The driver of the dark Mercedes fled the scene, with police urging them to “do the right thing” and turn themselves in.

In a statement shared via Police Scotland, they said: “Our beloved dad and dad were a bright light in our lives, full of love, energy and kindness. It’s hard to believe that he was taken from us far too soon.

“We were blessed to have him and know that his warmth and laughter touched so many. Messages and support from family and friends have brought us comfort at this painful time and we want to thank everyone who has reached out to us.

“Your kind words mean the world to us as we remember what a wonderful man he was and the love he gave to all of us.”

The investigation has so far confirmed that Mr Craig was crossing the road when he was hit by the car, which then drove off northbound.

Officers remain at the scene carrying out door-to-door inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage from the area.

Inspector Greg McLaughlan said: “Our investigations established that the car drove off northbound after the crash and we are carrying out a number of inquiries to trace the driver.

“Despite the passage of time, there were people and vehicles in the area and we are keen to speak to any potential witnesses who have not yet spoken to officers. We continue to appeal to anyone with information to come forward.

“I am appealing to anyone who was in the area between 12:30 and 12:45 to contact the police.

“I would also take this opportunity to appeal directly to the driver concerned to do the right thing. Please come over, introduce yourself and talk to us.”

Anyone with information or dash cam or CCTV footage that could help is asked to contact police on tel. 101quoting incident no. 0171 of Sunday, October 27, 2024.
