MARTA announces public transportation plan for Carter’s viewing

The body of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100, will be laid to rest at The Carter Presidential Center from 7 p.m. on January 4 to 6 a.m. on January 7. The body will be transported to Washington for additional services.

For those wishing to pay their respects, MARTA will offer a free, direct shuttle bus service from the King Memorial Train Station to the Carter Presidential Center. These buses will operate continuously, departing every three to five minutes around the clock during the designated period.

Visitors wishing to attend the event must take a bus from King Memorial Station, although walking and cycling are permitted. The bus ride is free, but riders must still pay to ride MARTA to King Memorial.

Parking is not available at King Memorial, but MARTA offers ample parking throughout its system. Public transport services will run every 15-20 minutes from King Memorial, with some local bus routes being diverted.

Security measures are in place and visitors will be searched.

PROHIBITED ITEMS:

Backpacks/handbags/handbags/clutches/camera bags are not permitted on buses or on The Carter Center property. The exception will be diaper bags, which will be checked manually. Aerosols, ammunition, animals other than service animals, bicycles, balloons, refrigerators, drones and other unmanned aircraft systems, explosives, firearms, glass, thermal or metal containers, laser pointers, maces, packaging, selfie sticks, toy guns , weapons of any kind or any other items considered to be a potential security risk are not permitted.

MARTA will have additional staff on hand to assist mourners during the tribute period, which is expected to attract many visitors in recognition of President Carter’s enduring connection to Georgia.
