HMPV cases in India live: Prayagraj on high alert due to virus as devotees arrive at Maha Kumbh

Causes of HMPV in India: Amid growing concerns over respiratory diseases, Indian authorities have confirmed multiple cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), two of which were reported in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and one in Gujarat. This development coincides with widespread epidemics of viral fever and pneumonia in countries such as China.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a statement in response to media reports on the HMPV cases, confirming that both cases in Karnataka were identified through routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. ICMR stressed that HMPV is not a new virus and is spreading across the world, including India.

“Cases of HMPV associated with respiratory disease have been reported in several countries. “We continue surveillance efforts as part of our commitment to monitor respiratory diseases across the country,” the statement said.

What is HMPV?
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a widely recognized respiratory virus that causes infections of both the upper and lower respiratory tract. Although this is not a new discovery, cases of this phenomenon have been documented around the world over the years. Since no specific antiviral treatment is available, prevention is key to controlling the spread of the virus.

Treatment and medical preparedness
There is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Care focuses on managing symptoms with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications. Severe cases may require hospitalization for oxygen therapy or intravenous fluids.

Hospitals in Karnataka have been advised to:

  1. Report cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI).
  2. Ensure the availability of necessary medicines.
  3. Maintain proper records of all matters.

Government consulting: orders and prohibitions
In response to these cases, the Government of Karnataka has released a checklist to help residents stay vigilant:

What to do:

  1. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  2. Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  3. Wear a mask in crowded places to reduce the risk of transmission.
  4. Stay hydrated and if you feel unwell, make rest a priority.
  5. If symptoms worsen, seek medical attention.

What’s not allowed:

  1. If you have symptoms, avoid public places.
  2. Don’t share personal items such as towels or handkerchiefs.
  3. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth.
  4. Refrain from spitting in public places.
