The body of a 20-year-old second-year BA LLB student of a private university was found dead in her hostel room in Malhaur on Friday morning.

According to the police, the woman also left a farewell letter in which she apologized to her parents.

“The deceased woman, a native of Mathura, was residing in room number 308A since July 2024.” Lucknow police said. “The police also found a farewell letter at the scene, which read: ‘I’m sorry, mom, dad, I’m not a good daughter,'” police sources say.

“On Friday morning, two of her roommates knocked on the door at 8.20 a.m., following which the assistant warden of the college hostel, Deepti Mishra, opened the door with the help of a guard and discovered the student’s body hanging with a dupatta tied to the ceiling fan in the room,” Shashank Singh said , DCP, eastern zone.

As soon as the information was conveyed to the police, Deputy Commissioner of Police Vibhuti Khand, Radharaman Singh and a police team inspected the spot and a forensic team was called to the spot for inspection.

“The Chinhat police have sent the body for post-mortem and the family members have been informed,” Lucknow police said.

Before taking the drastic step, the woman allegedly talked on the phone with her friend and during the conversation they argued about something. At the scene, the police seized a mobile phone and a register.

“Further action will be taken based on the autopsy report and mobile documentation. As of now, the written request of the hostel manager in which he informed the police about the incident has been considered,” said ACP Vibhuti Khand.

In a statement, the university expressed regret over the death and said: “It appears that the student took this extreme step for personal reasons. The campus is deeply saddened and saddened by this unfortunate event.

“In this hour of mourning, the university stands with the family and is providing all the support and cooperation needed.”
