21-year-old engineering student found dead in IIT Kharagpur hostel | Calcutta

Though the student appeared to have died by suicide, the West Midnapore district police ordered an investigation

Calcutta: Police said a 21-year-old student was found dead in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur in West Midnapore district of West Bengal on Sunday.

The family of a third-year electrical engineering student lives in the Kasba area of ​​south Kolkata.

“The student’s body was discovered by his parents who visited him during the weekend holidays. He stayed at Azad Hall Hostel. He didn’t answer when they knocked on the door. The parents broke down the door with the help of some students,” said a district police officer, requesting anonymity.

“Though the student appeared to have died by suicide, an inquiry was ordered by district police commissioner Dhritiman Sarkar, who reached the spot. Sniffer dogs were also taken to the campus. The body was shifted to the sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem,” the official added.

“Students who knew the deceased are being questioned. Samples of food eaten by the deceased on Saturday evening were taken for forensic examination. His mobile phone was also seized,” he added.

Kharagpur IT director Amit Patra told local media on Sunday evening that the student’s death has shocked everyone.

“He was a very good student and a gentle person. He was friendly to everyone. The cause of his tragic death must be investigated. Only the police can do this. We will cooperate with the police,” Patra said.
