1 dies in BNP faction clash in Kishoreganj

Yesterday, a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was killed and five people injured in an intra-party clash in Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj.

The incident took place at Banail Bazar in Rauti around 11 am.

The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Abul Hasan, president of the Rauti union unit of the BNP. Five people were also injured in the clash, said Sohel Mia, commander of the Tarail police station.

According to residents and party sources, the violence stemmed from a disagreement over the draft list of councilors for the upcoming BNP Tarail upazila council held on January 15.

They said a meeting was called in Rauti on Saturday to discuss the list of councilors. During the meeting, Abul Hasan and Ghias Uddin, a member of the BNP union, got into an argument over the list.

They added that the dispute escalated into a standoff the next morning.

“The injured were taken to Tarail Upazila Health Complex. Abul Hasan was pronounced dead at the hospital. Additional police forces were dispatched to control the situation,” the organizer said.

Shamim Mia, the deceased’s nephew, accused that the attack was planned to kill his uncle in front of the party council.

“We will soon file a case in connection with my uncle’s murder,” he said.

BNP district general secretary Mazharul Islam said the party would take action against those responsible for the violence.

Abul Hasan’s body has been sent to the Kishoreganj Shaheed Nazrul Islam Medical College mortuary for post-mortem, the inquiry committee said.

He added that no arrests have been made so far.
