Warren Gatland questioning opinions on Wales review was ‘weak’ – Ellis Jenkins

Former Wales flanker Ellis Jenkins believes Warren Gatland’s decision to question the lack of winning experiences of many of those involved in the recent independent review of Welsh rugby was “poor”.

Following a record 12 consecutive Test defeats, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) carried out a review following the Autumn Nations Series in a bid to improve all aspects of the game in the country.

However, speaking about the review during the 2025 Six Nations squad announcement, Gatland said: “Sometimes I ask questions of players who have given us feedback and stuff, what has their experience been like in a professional, winning environment?”

The Wales head coach added: “Even for those reviewing or being involved in the process, these are questions I have been asking myself. What is their experience or involvement in professional environments that achieve high levels in sports?”

Jenkins, a former Wales player, believes Gatland was wrong to question the validity of some of the opinions provided as part of the review.

“I was really surprised by his response,” Jenkins told Scrum V: The Warm Up.

“To question players and the validity of their opinions just because they haven’t been involved in an international, winning environment is poor in my opinion.

“If you’re going to review, you don’t have to follow all of the feedback, but at least take it into account.

“The fact that they have not been involved in a winning campaign, and in fact very few players in Wales have been involved in a successful international campaign over the last few years, does not invalidate their opinion.

“The way it’s worded and the questioning of the process and the people involved in it doesn’t sit well with me at all.”
