A Rajasthan minister says “love matters” are behind some of the student suicides in Kota.

Cat:

Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar on Saturday cited a ‘love affair’ as the reason behind student suicides at a coaching center in Kota, while urging parents to be careful and not put pressure on their children to study.

This year, three students in Kota committed suicide. In 2024, 17 such cases were recorded in the city, which is an important center of coaching institutions.

Mr. Dilawar, who also holds the Panchayati Raj portfolio, spoke to reporters after the program during which SVAMITVA cards for land ownership were issued to beneficiaries in Bundi.

Asked about student suicides in Kota, the minister said he wanted to urge parents to be careful and not put pressure on their children regarding studies.

“I would sincerely like to urge, even though my words may irritate some, that parents be attentive and careful and do not put pressure on their children,” Dilawar said.

Every student has their own interests and becomes depressed when they are forced to pursue a goal in a field that is contrary to their interests and fail, he said.

Coaching institutes may play a small role in this, but friends play a key role as they often comment on students’ grades, he added.

In some cases, there are “love affairs” that result in students committing suicide, the minister noted.

Parents need to pay attention to their children’s movements and routines. But in reality, they are not that careful and if they lose control, students tend to go off in the wrong direction, Dilawar noted.
