A man died after colliding with a tow truck on a Kansas highway

CHEROKEE COUNTY — One person was killed in a crash just before noon Tuesday in Cherokee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Joesph Monroe Reed, 79, Vinita, Oklahoma, was traveling east on Old 166 at Kansas 26 Highway. He stopped at a stop sign at an intersection but did not yield.

A southbound Ford F650 tow truck towing a Nissan pickup truck, driven by Joseph Edward Anderson, 23, Webb City, Missouri, struck the Volkswagen on the driver’s side as it began to cross the intersection.

Reed was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Derfelt Funeral Home in Galena. Emergency medical services transported Volkswagen passenger Cynthia Kay Conrad, 73, Miami, Oklahoma, to Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Anderson was not injured. According to the KHP, all three were properly immobilized.
