10 people killed and 19 injured after vegetable truck overturned on NH-63

Karwar: Ten people were killed and 19 injured when a truck carrying vegetables overturned on National Highway 63 near Gullapur in Yellapur taluk of Uttara Kannada district in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to sources, the truck was traveling from Savanur in Haveri district to Kumta, carrying vegetables to the weekly market. There were approximately 29 people on board the vehicle, including three in the cabin. When the truck approached Gullapur around 4.15 am, about 20 km from Yellapur, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Local police from Yellapur station reached the spot and started rescue operation. The injured were rushed to KIMS hospital in Hubballi where they were provided medical attention.

Eight people died on the spot, one died of injuries on the way to hospital, and another died later.

The deceased were identified as: Fayaz (51), Vasim (25), Ejaz (20), Sadik (30), Gulam Hussain (25), Imtiaz (30), Alfaz (42), Jilani (20), Aslam (24) and Jalal (29).

The remaining 19 people were injured. Ten people are undergoing treatment at KMCRI Hubballi.

Haveri Deputy Commissioner Dr Vijayamahantesh B Danammanavar said that the Prime Minister had announced an amount of Rs 3 lakh for the family of the deceased under the CM’s relief fund.

The DC also visited KMCRI and interacted with 10 injured people who are currently undergoing treatment there.

Offering condolences, Haveri MP and former Prime Minister Basavaraj Bommai mourned the death of the accident victims. In a statement regarding “X”, he noted that the victims came from economically disadvantaged families who depended on petty trading.

Bommai urged the government to provide adequate compensation to the families of the deceased and cover the medical expenses of the injured. He also called for a thorough investigation into the accident to prevent such incidents in the future.
