A second inmate dies in a Manitoba prison this week

A second inmate at Stony Mountain Institution north of Winnipeg died this week.

Shane Kruchak, 50, died on Thursday, the Correctional Service of Canada said on Friday.

Kruchak was serving a sentence of two years, six months and 18 days from December 4, 2024. The release did not say what he was convicted of or how he died.

Kruchak’s next of kin have been notified.

Michael McKay, 54, also died in custody on Monday. McKay was serving a sentence of six years, one month and 11 days from December 10, 2020.

The Correctional Service of Canada says it will review the circumstances of the inmate’s death and, as policy, notify police and the coroner.
