AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – One of the latest victims of gun violence in Augusta was 15-year-old Devayn Grissam.

Authorities say was shot dead on Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. on Helsinki Drive. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

As of Friday, Devayn’s family is still searching for a solution as information on potential suspects is limited.

“He took a piece of me. Yes, definitely. He took a piece of me and I don’t know if I’ll recover from it, you know,” said Telisha Grissam, Devayn’s aunt.

We met with Devayn’s family to see how they are honoring his life.

Moving forward without Devayn will be difficult for his family.

They’re already thinking about how different the holidays will be without him.

But Devayn’s family wanted to talk to us to share their story and their message for the community to put down the guns.

It’s cutting your life too early.

“We will never achieve this. They will be able to see their children grow up, but we will never be able to see them grow up and progress or what would happen to make them 15 forever,” Telisha said.

Devayn loved his family and they loved him.

“If I had known it would have been the last time I saw him, I would have hugged him a little tighter. I would talk to him a little longer. You never know when the last time you will lose someone you never knew. And losing a child to gun violence is difficult,” Telisha said.

On the day of Devayn’s death, his aunt says, “I remember almost falling to the floor at the Walmart in North Augusta when I found out he had been murdered.”

His family wants you to listen to their heartbreaking request.

“The cemeteries are filled with our children. They don’t have a chance at life, they don’t even have the experience to see what life is all about. At 15, you don’t know what life is about,” Telisha said.

Devayn’s family doesn’t want another family to feel their unbearable pain.

“They’ve put a lot of stress on this family right now because now we have to worry about how to bury a 15-year-old kid because it’s so unexpected,” Telisha said.

Together, his family decides to remember Devayn for the sake of his life.

“He loved playing basketball. He loved doing somersaults, like gymnastics. He kept falling over. He was a practical joker. Every time you see him, he always jokes that he’s having fun,” his aunt said.

In their eyes he will be 15 forever.

“I speak on behalf of his father, his mother and his grandmother. I am speaking on behalf of my family. This is a pain we will endure for the rest of our lives,” Telisha said.

So far, no arrests have been made in connection with Devayn’s death.
