Officials say a shooting suspect fled from officers in Hardeman County and opened fire on a state trooper.

At the request of 25th Judicial District Attorney General Mark Davidson, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in Hardeman County.

Preliminary information indicates that just before 1:20 p.m. Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a call of a shooting on Highway 18 in Hardeman, near the Madison County line.

According to the TBI, after the shooting, the suspect fled the scene with the infant in the vehicle, leading to a pursuit and an exchange of gunfire between the two Tennessee Highway Patrol soldier and suspect.

The services say the shooter fled the scene along Highway 18, where a THP soldier intercepted the suspect’s vehicle around 1:30 p.m.

The perpetrator did not stop and shot the policeman. The officer then returned fire as the vehicle crashed south of Highway 100. The driver died at the scene.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading up to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

The TBI confirmed that the incident began as a domestic violence incident, with two women shot at the original scene. One of the women was transported to Regional One Hospital in Memphis with serious injuries. The other was taken to a hospital in Jackson for treatment.

The investigation is active and ongoing to determine whether the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was hit by soldier gunfire.

Throughout the process, findings from the investigation will be made available to the Attorney General for further review and consideration.
