A woman died after a weekend apartment fire in Au Gres

AU GRES, Mich. (WNEM) – A woman died on Friday, December 27, as a result of injuries sustained in an apartment fire in Au Gres that took place over the weekend.

On Sunday, December 22, a fire broke out at Riverside Manor in Au Gres. The Au Gres Sims Whitney Fire Department said firefighters were on scene for 11 hours extinguishing the fire.

On Monday, December 23, it was confirmed that eight people were taken to hospital, and one of them was in a critical condition. In total, 16 families were displaced due to the fire.

Au Gres Sims Whitney Fire Chief Kurt Humerickhouse confirmed to TV5 that one of the victims died Friday morning. Humerickhouse said the victim was on oxygen and smoking in his apartment, he said, adding that that likely caused the fire.

Humerickhouse said seven other victims were expected to survive.

Arenac Christmas for children she collected donations for Christmas gifts for children who lost everything in the fire. On Thursday, December 26, the organization said it was pausing donations because the community had been so generous that they were still reviewing donations.
