The next morning, police were called to the woman’s home, where she was found with facial injuries.

She was taken to hospital and the man she was with the previous evening was arrested for assault.

Following this conversation, PC Coffey made an entry into the police system about the previous night’s incident, but the IOPC found that this entry was misleading.

The case was also referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Mr Coffey was charged with corruption or improper exercise of police powers.

He denied the allegations, and in June 2023, the CPS dropped the charge against him.

Detective Inspector Pete Littlewood, head of Cleveland Police’s anti-corruption and verification unit, said: “Coffey not only failed the police but also a vulnerable woman who needed our help and protection – and this is far worse.”
